Abstract
Background & Objective: Drug interactions are preventable medications error that cause increasing risk of hospitalization,duration stay in hospital, cost of treatment, mortality and adverse drug reactions.The objective of this study was to estimate prevalence and pattern of potential drug interactions in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Razi Hospital in Qazvin. Materials & Methods: In the present retrospective cross-sectional study, the prescriptions of 144 patients admitted to ICU of RAZI hospital of Qazvin were investigated in terms of the number and type of drug interactions, gender, age, number of prescribed drugs, duration of ICU stay and number of prescribing doctors. In order to determine the number and type of drug interactions, a textbook and software of “Drug Interactions Facts” were used. Data analysis was performed by SPSS 20 statistical software with respect to the study objectives using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, mann whttney test and pierson correlation. Results: An investigation of 1382 drugs, 618 drug interactions in 80 types were found. Overall in 86% of patients, potential drug interactions were observed. Moderate, delayed and possible interactions with 2 significance score were accounted for the most interaction found. The most observed interaction was between phenytoin & rantidine. Drug interaction prevalence are indicative of a significant correlation between the number of interactions and prescribed medication, length of stay, and number of prescribing doctors. Conclusion: Finding obtained the high rate of prevalence of drug interactions in intensive care unit, appears to require more attention to this issue to prevent and manage them. Increasing the knowledge of medical team should be considered seriously.
