Abstract

Background: Needle stick injury is a common occupational problem. Programming would be performed by initial evaluation of existing cases. Objective: This study was performed to determine the frequency and Causes of needle stick and sharp injuries among health care workers of Razi Hospital in Qazvin years 1391 and 1392. Methods and materials: In this observational study that was performed as a cross-sectional survey, 50 health care workers of Razi Hospital in Qazvin years 1391 and 1392 were enrolled by census manner and the characteristics of needle stick injury was evaluated. Results: In this study it was seen that 52% were male and the mean age was 37.7 years. The most injured patients were operation room personnels, surgeons, and nurses. The working years were more between 10 and 15 years and it was least at more than 20 years. The site of injury was mainly the operation room and emergency ward. Needle and suture needle were the most common tools with injury and the most common cause was suturing. Most injured subjects were using two latex glows with vinyl and also 10.4% had no care tools. Conclusions: Totally, according to the obtained results in this study it may be concluded that personnel of operation room and emergency ward are most exposed to needle stick and despite use of especial care tools the injuries may occur.
