Abstract

Introduction: Patients suffering from chronic medical conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, often suffer from mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, which is necessary to identify the factors affecting it. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts in patients admitted to the cardiac department . Materials and Method: This study was performed on 200 patients admitted in the heart department of Bou-Ali Hospital. After obtaining patients' satisfaction and recording demographic data, anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts were measured through a Beck questionnaire. Student tests, T student and ANOVA were used to compare the data. Results: Our results showed that 16% of patients had moderate to severe depression and 39.5% had moderate to severe anxiety and only 13.5% had high suicide risk and only 1.5% suicide. Our study also showed that anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts have a direct and significant relationship with age. (P <0.05). But only depression had a direct and significant relationship with low education and unemployment. (P <0/05) Conclusion: Considering the high prevalence of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts in cardiac patients, it is necessary to identify and perform therapeutic measures in patients especially those at high risk of mental illness.
