Abstract
Back ground: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic inflammatory disease. RA can affect all racial groups. In various studies, the prevalence is estimated from 0.5 to 1%. Due to the fact that drug therapy for the control of symptoms of RA is associated with many adverse side effects, there is a growing demand for the expansion of natural compounds and herbal extracts to produce substances such as antioxidants. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of supplementation of Curcumin Nano-micelles on tenderness, swelling, and inflammation of joints in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Material and methods: Patients with RA referring to a specialized rheumatology clinic in Qazvin, 60 eligible patients were selected and randomly divided into intervention and placebo groups. Eventually, 49 patients completed the study. Individuals received daily 3 capsules of 40 mg Nano micelle of curcumin for 90 days. The control group received 3 capsules of wheat flour daily. Pain, swelling and inflammation of the joints were measured before and after the intervention. Results: After intervention, the pain and swelling of the joints in both intervention and placebo groups were significantly reduced, which was seen in the intervention group. Inflammation did not significantly decrease. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, the addition of Nano-mucosal curcumin in patients with rheumatoid arthritis leads to a greater reduction in pain and joint swelling than medication alone. But it has no effect on inflammation.
