Abstract

Background and aim: Honey is used worldwide because of its nutritional and medicinal properties. Antibiotic drugs are used in beehives to prevent diseases such as American foulbrood and European foulbrood. One of the most widely used antibiotics is Tetracycline. Tetracycline residues in honey cause harmful effects on consumers' health, so it is very important to control this antibiotic. The aim of the present study was to determine the amount of Tetracycline antibiotic residue in honey samples of different regions of Qazvin province and to compare with the standards. Materials and methods: The present study is a cross-sectional study that was conducted on breeding farms of bee in different areas of Qazvin province (Takestan, Abeyek, Alamot-e-sharghi and Alamot-e-gharbi) during 2019. 80 honey samples were collected from the mentioned areas. The samples were transported to the Food Safety Laboratory under appropriate conditions. First, Honey samples were assayed In terms of existence Tetracycline antibiotic residue using ELISA. Then, samples with values above the kit’s LOD in ELISA method, were measured using HPLC method. Data were entered into SPSS software version 23, and then Mann-Whitney test was used at the significant level P <0.05. Results: According to ELISA results, the maximum and minimum levels of Tetracycline residue were 40 PPB and 1.26 PPB respectively. Of the 80 honey samples, 4 samples (5%) had antibiotic more than the highest LOD of the kit. These 4 samples were tested using HPLC method. The results of HPLC showed that out of 4 honey samples, one sample was more than 40 PPB, but 3 samples were less than 40 PPB. Conclusion: The present study showed that honey samples collected from different areas of Qazvin province contained Tetracycline antibiotics. Given the importance of honey for human health and the widespread use of Tetracycline in beehives, measures are needed to control food products of animal origin, especially honey.
