Abstract

Introduction: After a traumatic event, some people experience positive psychological changes in different areas. These positive changes are often the result of patients' struggle to cope with the challenges. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between posttraumatic growth, meaning of life and perceived social support in patients with myocardial infarction. Methods: This was a descriptive-correlational study conducted on patients hospitalized because of myocardial infarction in the Bu Ali Sina Center of Qazvin. All the patients had undergone primary PCI. A total of 191 patients were selected using available sampling method based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. After explaining the aims of the study and acquiring informed consent, eligible patients were included. The participants suggested a place where they felt comfortable and then completed posttraumatic growth, perceived social support and meaning of life questionnaires in the presence of the researcher. Data was analyzed by SPSS software version 22. Results: Of the 191 patients studied, 142 (74.3%) were male, 186 (97.4%) were married, and 117 (61.3%) had less than diploma education. The mean values of posttraumatic growth, meaning of life and perceived social support were obtained as 64.6 ±11.5, 49 ±6.64, and 39.3 ±5.6 respectively. The means of posttraumatic growth were 64.9, 68.8, and 68.4 in married individuals, university graduates, and retirees respectively. There were positive significant relationships between the posttraumatic growth and social support (r = 0.47, p <0.001) and meaning of life (r = 0.71, p <0.001). Furthermore, a positive and significant relationship was found between social support and meaning of life (r = 0.46, p <0.001). Conclusion: Present study indicated a close relationship among posttraumatic growth, social support and meaning of life. Traumatized individuals with deeper perceived meaning of life or higher social support may have faster and better recovery and even flourish their potential abilities after crisis. In general, these three components appear to be essential for achieving a stable post-crisis condition and act together to help individuals. Implementing low-cost measures such as strengthening social support systems and creating mechanisms that improve people's understanding of life can prevent costly post-crisis consequences for individuals and health systems. Keyword: Post-trauma growth, meaning of life, perceived social support.
